DENVER - A group of ministers is asking for Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper's help in getting what they consider a strict punishment for the police officer who killed a develop-mentally disabled teenager last summer.

Denver Police Department Officer James Turney shot and killed 15-year-old Paul Childs last July. He was responding to a 911 call from the teen's home.

The Ministerial Alliance outlined several things it would like the mayor to do to secure more than a 20-day suspension for Turney, which the department is recommending as punishment. The alliance says a 20-day suspension is an insult.

"If this recommendation is allowed to stand, we plan to protest vigorously and to use whatever tactics of civil disobedience that are at our disposal," said the alliance's Reginald Holmes.

The alliance wants the mayor to push for a minimum one-year suspension for Turney, along with regular mental health evaluations.

The mayor has not commented on the alliance's response.

The city manager of safety has two weeks to make a decision.

A group called Cop Watch was planning a protest near Denver Police Department District 2 Headquarters Friday evening.
